NEW IN THIS WEEK - 19/10/09

SEASICK STEVE - MAN FROM ANOTHER TIME
Seasick Steve follows the phenomenal success of his prior top 10 album - the brilliantly-named: 'I started out with nothing' and I still got most of it left' with the release of the new album 'man from another time' on Atlantic records. Produced, written, recorded and engineered by seasick Steve (with the assistance of engineer Roy Williams), 'man from another time' is a resolutely organic album that eschews modern studio trickery in favour of the warm style of 'live' analogue recording. Everything on the album was performed by seasick Steve, aside from drums which are credited to his longstanding Swedish sticksman Dan Magnusson. Seasick Steve utilised a variety of favourite guitars on the album including a one-string didley-bo (a 2x4 with a string nailed to it), a guitar made out of an old cigar box (with four strings), his famous 3-string trance wonder guitar and an old beat-up acoustic guitar. His array of guitars were complimented by a tattered fifties fender tweed deluxe amp, old forties ribbon mics and other weird and wonderful vintage microphones. The natural sounds and echoes of the recording rooms were used for reverb and any delays were done with tape. This is a down-in-the-dirt record. Feast your ears! "I hope by making records like this, that it'll make people want to hear music that's recorded without the use of digital equipment, and that people's ears can get a little rest from all that shit," commented seasick. "But if not, at least it was nice for me. Me and computers do not see eye to eye." 'Man from another time' was mixed by Vance Powell at Nashville’s blackbird studios and mastered by ray staff at air studios, London.

MR HUDSON – STRAIGHT NO CHASER
Following the success of his massive hit single 'supernova', Mr Hudson releases his new album 'straight no chaser'. It is a take-no-prisoners collection of monster pop hooks, shiny plastic synths, vocoder vocals, and piercingly lyrical songs of love and disaster, heartache and hope. 'straight no chaser' is chock full of punchy, sing-along pop songs, such as glam slamming 'white lies', electro anthem 'knew we were trouble', lyrically twisting relationship drama 'stiff upper lip', bar room gospel hymn 'lift your head' and consoling ballad 'time'. "I think it's a great time in pop music," says Mr Hudson. "Cos no one gives a shit about the supposed divisions between hip hop and guitar music anymore, they want to hear everything all in one go, the best of all these worlds, and they want it in two minutes, which suits me. This is a pop album. It’s my greatest hits. It’s about blowing up and busting out. It’s me saying goodbye to normality. My bags are in the hall. I’ve got my laptop and my passport and I’m gone."

MANU CHAO – BAIONARENA
Double CD plus DVD live album from the international superstar and former Mano Negra leader. following 'la radiolina', a Grammy nomination, a two year worldwide tour and more than 100 gigs headlining the biggest festivals from Russia to san Francisco, Manu Chao and radio bemba sound system pffer this great live release, entitled 'Baionarena'. the album includes all classics and unreleased songs recorded in the historical arena of Bayonne (france). the DVD features the full two hour and 25 minute concert, plus extra videos from the album 'la radiolina' and exclusive tour photos.

KINGS OF CONVENIENCE – DECLARATION OF DEPENDANCE
Norwegian duo kings of convenience are back after four years with their third studio album, 'declaration of dependence'. The album is a wonderful record for a lot of reasons. for one, Erik be is equally comfortable talking about the record's 'serious ideas' and laughing about its' 'hi-brow bossa nova' moments while his partner Erlend Oye is clearly thrilled by making, 'the most rhythmical pop record ever that features no percussion or drums.' for another, there is no one who makes records like they do. 'When we started out we were afraid of sounding like other artists,' Erlend says. 'but now we feel pretty much alone.' but the most striking thing about this album is how powerfully it reminds you that making music together is not a game, it's not something to be undertaken lightly, this record is part of a much larger picture, a long and involved relationship that has had its good and bad times. 'declaration of dependence' is the story of two people living two very different lives sensing that they are immensely more powerful together than apart. In that sense it is the most adult, the most mature record kings of convenience have ever made. That it is their most gripping, their most revealing is, if anything, just a by-product of that honesty and their endeavour.

SUFJAN STEVENS - THE BQE
Sufjan Stevens presented "The BQE", a film and musical suite exploring New York City's infamous Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, at The Brooklyn Academy Of Music's Next Wave Festival in November 2007. The critically applauded performance featured 36 performers including a band, a wind and brass ensemble, string players, a horn section, projected film footage of the expressway and five hula hoopers.

LYLE LOVETT - NATURAL FORCES
Natural Forces is the stunning new album from the one and only Lyle Lovett, is set for an Texas is the common theme running throughout Natural Forces, but not as the subject matter as much as the songwriters Lovett chose to cover. Natural Forces boasts four Lovett-penned originals, with seven songs written by Texas songwriters Lovett admires. Lovett recorded Natural Forces with his legendary Large Band, and long-time collaborator Billy Williams returns to co-produce. Despite recording with his band, most of Lovett's arrangements on Natural Forces are subtle and hauntingly beautiful. His gorgeous versions of Eric Taylor's 'Whooping Crane', Vince Bell's 'Sun and Moon and Stars' and Townes Van Zandt's 'Loretta' are powerful reminders that Lovett possesses one of the most distinctive voices in music. Lovett has not lost his wry sense of humour and penchant for the up-tempo arrangements he's known for, as heard on 'Farmer Brown/Chicken Reel' and 'Pantry' (co-written by April Kimble). Lovett also warns of the pitfalls and demands of rock stardom in the revved up 'It's Rock And Roll' (co-written by Robert Earl Keen). Since his self-titled debut in 1986, Lyle Lovett has created an incredible body of acclaimed work. His song writing melds blues, country, rock, gospel, big band swing, jazz and folk into a unique and rich style that has become synonymous with the artist. Natural Forces continues in the tradition of timeless music Lovett continues to create.

GLISS – DEVOTION IMPLOSION
Gliss is experimental messed up pop. Gliss is that split second of breathless exhilaration. you can find Gliss in Los Angeles...unless they are touring with the Raveonettes, the editors, black rebel motorcycle club, smashing pumpkins or we are scientists. Gliss' second album is 'devotion implosion'. gliss will turn you on with their fuzzed-out guitars and krautrock rhythms. gliss will love you back. Gliss is happiest blowing your mind! 'devotion implosion' feels like the morning after. it was mixed by Gareth Jones (who has worked with Depeche Mode, liars, wire, nick cave and these new puritans). Gliss is being up all night; an overdose of sound, chaos, beauty, and rock 'n' roll excess. Gliss is shattered soundscapes that melt you into a devotion implosion.

RAMMSTEIN - LIEBE IST FUR ALLE
Four years after their last studio album 'Rosenrot' comes this eagerly anticipated sixth full-length from the German industrial metallers, whose title translates as "Love Is There For All". Produced by the band with their longterm collaborator Jacob Hellner, it is already being spoken about in hushed tones as their best work since 2001's 'Mutter'. It features some of the heaviest material they have ever recorded as well as lyrics in English for the first time, notably on the controversial single 'Pussy'.

HEAVY TRASH – MIDNIGHT SOIL SERENADE
Jon Spencer and Matt Verta-Ray continue to ransack '50s, '60s, and '70s, punk, blues and rock 'n' roll on this their third album, 'midnight soul serenade', already considered by most to be Jon Spencer’s best work since 'orange'. Jon Spencer is one of the last great rock 'n' roll entertainers. He has fronted a long line of superb acts going back to the mid-'80s, including pussy galore, boss hog and the Jon Spencer blues explosion. Guitarist, matt verta-ray started out with weird indie outfit madder rose before ripping it up with speedball baby.
